Summary

Sixteen-year-old Nate is a GEM—Genetically Engineered Medi-tissue created by the scientists of Gathos City as a cure for the elite from the fatal lung rot ravaging the population。 As a child, he was smuggled out of the laboratory where he was held captive and into the Withers—a quarantined, lawless region。 Nate manages to survive by using his engineering skills to become a Tinker, fixing broken tech in exchange for food or a safe place to sleep。 When he meets Reed, a kind and fiercely protective boy that makes his heart race, and his misfit gang of scavengers, Nate finds the family he’s always longed for—even if he can’t risk telling them what he is。

But Gathos created a genetic failsafe in their GEMs—a flaw that causes their health to rapidly deteriorate as they age unless they are regularly dosed with medication controlled by Gathos City。 As Nate’s health declines, his hard-won freedom is put in jeopardy。 Violence erupts across the Withers, his illegal supply of medicine is cut off, and a vicious attack on Reed threatens to expose his secret。 With time running out, Nate is left with only two options: work for a shadowy terrorist organization that has the means to keep him alive, or stay — and die — with the boy he loves。

LGBTQ+ Science FictionI'm giving this book only five stars because that's the highest quantity available on review sites。 (There's no "click here to give all the stars in the sky" 。。。 that I know of, anyway。) To say this book is good is an understatement。 Exceptional, marvelous, superb, wonderful-- I LOVE this book。 I had to update my NaNoWriMo profile to reflect having a new favorite。 Can I add some hearts instead of just stars?💗🤍❤💕😍Set in the fictional future (which doesn't feel so fictional-- LGBTQ+ Science FictionI'm giving this book only five stars because that's the highest quantity available on review sites。 (There's no "click here to give all the stars in the sky" 。。。 that I know of, anyway。) To say this book is good is an understatement。 Exceptional, marvelous, superb, wonderful-- I LOVE this book。 I had to update my NaNoWriMo profile to reflect having a new favorite。 Can I add some hearts instead of just stars?💗🤍❤💕😍Set in the fictional future (which doesn't feel so fictional-- thanks, 2020), on the poor side of town- the quarantined island, everyone struggles to survive。 Nate wasn't born but created, and his blood can do amazing healing on others, at a painful cost to him。 (It sounds like "donor babies," but since they're grown in a lab, people care even less。) The world has a drug problem (like the opioid crisis) and a respiratory problem (do I even have to mention the "C" word that ruined and ruled all of our lives in 2020???)。 All the science in this science fiction is plausible。 You might think that kind of reality-smacking-into-fiction would make this harder to read, yet I found the opposite to be true。 Because the book isn't really about those things, that's just well-written background noise。 The book is about relationships, making your own family, loyalty, love, and giving everything and anything for the one you love。 It might not sound like it, but this is my honest and unbiased review。 I got an ARC copy of this book when I interviewed this debut author for Operation Awesome。 (To be clear-- this is a DEBUT book! 😲 Ground-level fandom。 Start the party!) I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a really great story with a teenage chaotic good main character。 There's diversity in that most of the main characters are extremely poor, multiple characters are gay, Sparks is probably trans ("when her appearance matched who she was"), and various skin colors are mentioned (bronze, brown, pale)。 I don't read a lot of science fiction, but I do love diverse books and especially ones with such well-written characters and storylines, and this book is an example of the kind of scifi I like the most。 I would absolutely read another book from this author。 Even though Fragile Remedy is a stand-alone book, I'm hoping it will turn into a series。 The ending does wrap up the story, but it leaves room to add to it。 (Reed for mayor, president, whatever leadership roles exist!) Plus, I want to read about Pixel growing up, I want to see her improve the world。 And what about other GEMs in the Gathos City towers? We need more books so Nate can go save them! This book is realistic fiction with a bit of science that hasn't happened yet。 It was happily-ever-after (as much as it can)。 It's romantic in that will-they-or-won't-they way where the reader can see how perfect Nate and Reed are for each other but Nate's anxiety needs to get out of the way first。 (And also, shower first, guys! There's a great scene where they kiss, but it gets interrupted by sneezing。 LOVE that part of the book。) Fragile Remedy is thrilling, action-packed, fast-paced, and has many plot twists。 (The current book description, that's just the first third of the story。 There is so much more!) It's fun and entertaining (especially Alden)。 "Only Alden could make falling asleep a dramatic exit。" It seems like the antagonist is everyone from Gathos City, since they've abandoned all of these people, leaving them with sickness and poverty。 But there's another antagonist who is revealed later。 "We didn't start riots, people did," the antagonist says。 Similarly, the backstory of how the characters met each other is skillfully woven into the book, each revealed at precisely the right moment。 Also excellently done is how Mora wrote Nate's fear of heights without being direct about it。 I learned the term hiccoughed from reading this book。 A word that instantly makes sense and has an obvious meaning and sound, yet I've never seen used before。 The scratchy blue cover with the crumbling city and the vial makes sense when reading the book。 The title also matches the story。 I saw only one possible typo in the entire ARC。 I imagine Pixel is the author's favorite character, though there are many excellent characters in this story。 The book was hard to put down because there is so much action and so much heart。 Every action, every choice, has a purpose in this book。 I could relate to several of the characters because of my life, and I've known some people who remind me of several of the characters。 (Notably Alden and Brick。) Speaking of Brick, I enjoyed that the character names were easy to remember because the names "fit" the characters。 Though there's a strong romance element, it just barely hints at PG-13 level of steam。 The setting is well fleshed-out, allowing the reader to feel the poverty and ruin in which the characters reside。 Nothing came easy for any of the characters。 The book absolutely holds up a mirror to society, to how we too often treat the sick, how people can turn on one another and use each other, but also how people can really love and give everything for someone。 It's the very best of people versus the very worst, which is what makes it so wonderful。 。。。more

I dunno what to think。 I didn't dislike the book, but I felt like I could never really engage with the characters。 There was something thin to their interactions。 But an alright read, dystopia light。 Great diversity of characters, and the harshness of the world was biting and refreshing。 I dunno what to think。 I didn't dislike the book, but I felt like I could never really engage with the characters。 There was something thin to their interactions。 But an alright read, dystopia light。 Great diversity of characters, and the harshness of the world was biting and refreshing。 。。。more

Wonderfully written。I know this took me longer than usual to read, but I can ensure you that it had nothing to do with the book and everything to do with me。Nate and Reed are absolutely charming together。 The interactions make me go ajxjajsjqjjdwjkadjakwkxjnw, if you know what I mean。The storyline is essentially Nate’s journey with those he loves and ends with the revelations and losses。 I like how things are introduced and sort of speckled into the story such as Val。 It’s not just bAM here’s a Wonderfully written。I know this took me longer than usual to read, but I can ensure you that it had nothing to do with the book and everything to do with me。Nate and Reed are absolutely charming together。 The interactions make me go ajxjajsjqjjdwjkadjakwkxjnw, if you know what I mean。The storyline is essentially Nate’s journey with those he loves and ends with the revelations and losses。 I like how things are introduced and sort of speckled into the story such as Val。 It’s not just bAM here’s a new thing oh no。 Maybe it’s just me but the flow was a little rocky? Great, natural representation, well written relationships。 I liked how complex the relationship between Nate and Alden was。 The writing itself was great, but the plot was just ok。 Shoutout to the author for writing this fantastic book。

I love this book- it’s everything a good dystopian should be! It's a world that is at once so familiar, and still so foreign that you have to stop and think about how they got there from here and how easy it would be to slip down that path。 For every "that could never happen" there is that moment of "unless。。。" which is what makes dystopian books so compelling。 Mora creates this world so quickly and deftly that you are immediately immersed, there is no confusion about this world and where our characters fit in。 And the characters are something to behold。 Nate is our maind focus, he is a GEM (genetically engineered medi-tissue) - he was built quite literally to be used and abused and to keep the elite alive。 He is nothing to those in power, but everything to the people who love him。 He is smuggled out as a child and falls in with a street gang led by Reed。 They don't know what he is, or that without the medicine that keeps him well that he will die, sooner rather then later。 This leads to the main reason I love this book。 We get to see Nate go through the whole spectrum of emotions as he tries to figure out what to do。 He loves Reed, but isn't sure he can trust him with this secret, he isn't sure if letting Reed in would put Reed at risk。 He has to decide who to trust and who to stand up to and above all he has to decide what he is willing to risk。 The Nate and Reed relationship is perfect, and everyone can relate to that feeling of "what would I risk for this person?" The rest of the cast of characters are a great balance of people just trying to find their way in a world that isn't kind to them, to find a family that they can rely on, and to rise to the occassion when the moment presents itself。 I'm hoping there will be more to this series。 I love where the story ended, but there is so much more I would love to see。 This world and these characters are still calling my name and I can't wait to see what Maria Ingrande Mora does next。 。。。more

Loved this queer YA dystopian! So I usually avoid dystopian novels, but since it had queer rep, I decided to give it a try, and I'm glad I did! I really enjoyed getting to know the characters, and the world building was really detailed and unique。 And thankfully, though this is definitely a dystopian future, the story focuses on the found family dynamic instead of the horrible world around them。 Would definitely recommend for all fans of found family and dystopian YA books!! I was engrossed and stayed up too late to read it multiple times, and even as I didn’t really cry, I deeply felt some of the moments at the end in particular。 All of the relationships in this book were intriguing and the found FAMILY and the ROMANCE and the LOVE and the MESSINESS

This book is gorgeously written。 It sweeps you up into another world - a cruel one with so many visceral sights and smells and threats - but also into the hearts of the vulnerable, endearing characters。 (Reed was my very favorite。) There were several lines in this book that were just -chef's kiss- perfect。 The plot of the 2nd half really picks up and also gives space for the characters to become fully themselves。 This book is gorgeously written。 It sweeps you up into another world - a cruel one with so many visceral sights and smells and threats - but also into the hearts of the vulnerable, endearing characters。 (Reed was my very favorite。) There were several lines in this book that were just -chef's kiss- perfect。 The plot of the 2nd half really picks up and also gives space for the characters to become fully themselves。 。。。more

I really enjoyed this story。 World building is never easy, but you learn about this universe as you read and as you fall for each character and their tie to Nate and how they've ended up together。 It's a beautiful story about found family and found love and survival and after a few great big cry fests, I was left wanting more of Nate and Reed's story by the end。 Add this to your tbr lists! You can find the full review and all the fancy and/or randomness that accompanies it at It Starts at Midnight 3。5*So, I mostly liked this story, especially once I got into it。 It's about Nate, a young man who was genetically engineered。 In Nate's world, not only is he looked down upon, but he could be tortured or killed for his mere existence。 And oh yeah, his existence can straight up kill him right back。 So things aren't looking great, you see。 I am going to get my negative out of the way righ You can find the full review and all the fancy and/or randomness that accompanies it at It Starts at Midnight 3。5*So, I mostly liked this story, especially once I got into it。 It's about Nate, a young man who was genetically engineered。 In Nate's world, not only is he looked down upon, but he could be tortured or killed for his mere existence。 And oh yeah, his existence can straight up kill him right back。 So things aren't looking great, you see。 I am going to get my negative out of the way right now, and that is that I was kind of lost and overwhelmed at the start of the story。 Like, I understood what was going on with Nate to some extent, but figuring out the different factions of the world while trying to keep track of who's who in Nate's friend group was。。。 a lot。 But as the story went on, I did get a handle on it- mostly。 I did absolutely fall in love with Nate's friends, but I was still left a bit confused by the world。 I liked what I did get, but I felt like there was a lot more going on behind the scenes, so to speak。 Anyway, Nate is racing to save both himself and his friends and any other randos he stumbles upon。 When we meet him, he's worried about his increasing level of sickness, he's worried about his friends getting caught by baddies, and when he stumbles upon a train accident, he's worried about those guys。 Nate is a good dude, is the basic gist here。 And I loved that! Like, someone who actually just wants to be a good guy, it's refreshing。 As is his loyalty to his friends。 Granted, he often tended to this loyalty at his own expense, which is not what his friends would want, but his intentions are good。 There were some great twists along the way, too。 Some I saw coming, some I didn't, but I quite enjoyed the overall tone of the story, as well as the characters and their journeys。 Bottom Line: After a bit of a slow start, my heart was definitely captured by this group who just wanted to protect their found family, and wanted to make the world tolerable。  。。。more
